New data from health and nutrition app Lifesum has unveiled surprising insights into the foods that help ease hangover symptoms most effectively, ranking traditional comfort meals from around the world by their nutritional value and recovery benefits. The findings stem from the app’s annual Hangover Nutrition Index, which evaluates popular hangover foods across 10 countries based on nutrient quality, hydration potential and digestive support.
According to the index, Japan tops the list, with miso soup served with rice and pickles emerging as one of the most recovery-friendly options. Rich in electrolytes, fermented probiotics and low in fat, miso soup helps rehydrate and restore gut balance, offering quicker relief from common hangover discomforts. Close behind, countries like Korea and Sweden also feature hydrating soups and broths that combine vegetables, lean protein and minerals — highlighting the value of nutrient-dense, low-fat meals in recovery.
In contrast, the traditional heavy breakfast meals popular in the United States and the United Kingdom ranked lowest in the index. High in calories, saturated fats and low in fibre, options such as greasy fry-ups and full English breakfasts may provide temporary comfort but can worsen dehydration and digestive strain, slowing the body’s natural recovery process.
Nutrition experts note that effective hangover recovery is not just about indulgence — it is about rehydration, micronutrient balance and gentle digestion. Lifesum’s data suggests that meals combining broth, vegetables, lean proteins and probiotic-rich components can better support the body’s rebound after alcohol-induced stress.
For those coping with hangovers, Lifesum also recommends starting the day with hydrating foods like soups and broths, paired with fruit and vegetables to replenish electrolytes and vitamins. Including fermented foods such as kimchi or miso can further aid gut health, while avoiding overly heavy or high-fat plates may prevent additional metabolic strain.
As drinking patterns and food preferences vary widely, this index underscores how culturally rooted meals can influence recovery outcomes with lighter, nutrient-rich choices offering a clear edge in hangover relief.
