Brazil’s specialty coffee sector reached a historic milestone as a premium coffee bag from the Cerrado Mineiro region fetched a record-breaking US$38,500 at the 13th Cerrado Mineiro Regional Award, held in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. The winning lot, which topped the Pulped Cherry category, was produced by Eduardo Pinheiro Campos of Fazenda Dona Nenem, Presidente Olegário, and acquired by a strategic consortium led by Expocacer, alongside Veloso Green Coffee, Marex, and Nucoffee.
The auction also witnessed strong international participation, with Louis Dreyfus Company placing the second-highest bid of US$19,250 for the champion lot in the Natural category, underscoring the rising global demand for Cerrado Mineiro specialty coffees.
According to the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Growers Federation, this marks the highest price ever paid for a single bag of coffee at an auction in Brazil. Overall, the solidarity auction raised US$108,500 from nine winning lots, averaging around US$12,000 per bag, highlighting the exceptional quality and market value of coffees from the region.
Calling the achievement a testament to years of dedication, Campos said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of his entire team. “Throughout thirteen editions of this competition, we have reached the podium eleven times, proving the consistency of our journey and our commitment to excellence,” he said.
Simão Pedro, President of Expocacer, noted that the intense competition among international and domestic buyers validates the cooperative’s focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation, positioning Cerrado Mineiro as a global benchmark for specialty coffee.
The awards celebrated the finest coffees of the 2025–26 harvest across four categories—Natural, Pulped Cherry, Fermented, and Sweet Cerrado Mineiro—with Expocacer members securing top honours in multiple categories. Notably, 40 per cent of the auction proceeds (US$43,400) will support the Escola de Atitude initiative, promoting civic education among youth in coffee-growing communities.
