Our Bureau, Chennai
is all set to hit Chennai, when the 238-room hotel property in Anna Salai, opens up for business in mid-January. While this happens to be the first property to sport Marriott brand in Chennai, this is also the first Hotel using Courtyard brand in India.

While the property is owned by Palm Grove Beach Hotels, a Sandeep Raheja company, Courtyard will be managing it. The Rahejas had acquired this property, which was originally called the Srilekha Intercontinental, about two years ago. Courtyard, a mid-tier brand that's part of the Marriott International bouquet, manages 700 properties and is the 13th largest hotel chain in the world. Mariott International has so far launched four brands across six hotels in the 5-star and 5-star deluxe categories in India - JW Marriott, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Executive apartments and Marriott Hotels & Resorts. Of these, three hotels are in Mumbai, besides one each in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Goa.

"We are excited about this property, as it is the first for Marriott in Chennai and also the first for the Courtyard brand in India. The hotel will cater to the business guests, a category that accounts for nearly 95 per cent of the market in this city," Rajat Chatterjee, general manager, Courtyard Marriott told the press.

According to him, Chennai has everything going for it - better infrastructure when compared to few other cities, inflow of fresh investments in not only IT/ITES sectors but also in manufacturing segments of automobiles and electronic hardware, besides the traditional leather sector.

However, the next two years will see the demand going up sharply, even as the supply stagnates.

Courtyard Marriott's 238-room property will include five apartments, six suites and the rest classified as standard and deluxe rooms. A coffee shop to seat 108, a signature resto bar, an health club and executive lounge, besides a 24-hour operational gymnasium and business centre also form part of the property package.
