Apr–Jan farm & processed food exports rise 3.3% amid mixed commodity performance

India’s agricultural and processed food product exports recorded a modest increase of 3.3% during the April–January period of the current fiscal year, with the shipments valued at $20.99 billion, according to the latest trade data.

Despite the overall growth, the export performance across key commodity segments was mixed. Rice exports — traditionally India’s largest agri-export item — declined by 7.5% year-on-year to $9.33 billion in the April–January window. In January 2026 alone, rice shipments fell sharply, with revenues of $1.03 billion, down 25% compared with the same month last year, largely due to geopolitical tensions and competitive pressures from rival suppliers.

On the other hand, some segments demonstrated robust expansion. Shipments of buffalo meat, dairy and poultry products surged by around 25% to $5.19 billion, driven by strong global demand for Indian bovine meat exports. India remains a major supplier in markets such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Other agri-food categories also posted gains: fruits and vegetables exports rose close to 4% to approximately $3.09 billion, while exports of cereal preparations increased by over 4% to $2.69 billion during the ten-month period. Cashew shipments added further momentum with growth of more than 19% to $344 million.

Trade experts said the modest overall growth reflects both structural strengths and ongoing challenges in India’s farm export basket, where traditional staples face pricing and regulatory headwinds even as higher-value products gain traction internationally.

The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) continues to coordinate export strategies, especially for high-demand items like buffalo meat and processed foods, to expand India’s footprint in global markets.
