Dhwani Pandya, Mumbai
ednagar under the Department of Agronomy is organising a two-day training programme on Spirulina Production and Processing from October 10-11, 2006.

In India Central Food Technological Research institute (CFTRI), Mysore has developed the production technology for Spirulina. Krishi Vigyan Kendra is working for transfer of agricultural technologies among the farmers for improving productivity and socio economic status.

The course instructor Shailesh Deshmukh, scientist (Agronomy) will be covering major topics on basics of Spirulina cultivation, media preparation and culture multiplication, harvest and value addition of Spirulina by preparing various products. The training programme will cover the history of Spirulina, its benefits to human being, production technologies with practical skills, and processing to develop new products.

Speaking to Food & Beverage News Shailesh Deshmukh, Scientist, KVK said, "Spirulina is found to be the most powerful and well-balanced source of nutrition available on the planet." Japanese scientists look towards Spirulina as the solution to the world's hunger problem. NASA considers it an excellent, compact space food for astronauts. The WHO has called it one of the greatest super foods on earth.

Spirulina a single cell blue green algae, belongs to the Oscillatoriaceae family, Cyan bacteria characterised by spiral shaped chains of cells enclosed in a thin sheath. Spirulina is believed to have been the first form of plant life on earth. Originally it was found in alkaline lakes in Mexico and Africa, but has also been found in India in Lake Lonar in Maharashtra.

It is claimed that 1 kg of Spirulina is equivalent to 1,000 kg of assorted vegetables and 10 gm of spirulina contain 6.6 gm of protein (milk has 0.32 gm). In addition, it has no bad cholesterol, has 18 of the 22 amino acids the body needs, and is the richest source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that combats free radicals. Spirulina is also the only food source of Gamma linolenic acid, which prevents the accumulation of fats and cholesterol and reduces blood pressure and control body weight.

Deshmukh said, "Our aim behind conducting this training programme is to create awareness about the Spirulina among the rural community. We want to increase the usage of Spirulina in rural areas by starting the Spirulina production units on family bases, which will help in improving their health status. Also it will provide an opportunity to rural youth to start the commercial production of Spirulina for their self-employment.

Two days practical oriented Spirulina production training programme is being regularly organised by KVK to popularise this technology. Similarly they have developed some value added products from Spirulina to increase its demand. The course fee is Rs 1000 per person.
