the city's latest export product. Two orange producers have made possible something that horticulturists and experts always considered as impossible. The non-descript Isapur village, about 75 km from Nagpur, is home to that improbable dream which became a commercial reality after four years of untiring efforts and never say die spirit.
"It's different," say agriculturist-turned-wine makers, Devendra Deshmukh and Govind Dhamapurkar, at their indigenously developed winery, a pilot they set up four years ago in this village of Katol tehsil, a large orange-growing tract.
Deshmukh opines, "Our major achievement is not just in extracting wine from mandarins, but also in retaining the aroma and flavour of this citrus variety in the wine."
The region produces 7,83,837 tonnes of oranges on an average annually. Four oranges can yield one 750 ml bottle of wine at this winery, with a price tag of around Rs 400.
Mandarins are bitter with less brix (sweetness) and differ from grapes in all characteristics. The inherent bitterness of the Isapur wine required the removal of pectin, which posed a major problem in filtration.
Labelled as 'Mandarin Magic," Isapur wine will be hitting the markets this winter, but exporters are already queuing up.
