Heineken enters India, acquires 2 breweries

hich is 40% owned by Holland-based Heineken, is in advanced talkes to pick up 50% stake in Mount Shivalik's brewing business. Mount Shivalik, with Thunderbolt Strong Beer, accounts for 4% share of the domestic beer sales, and has two breweries in Rajasthan and Punjab.

Earlier this week, APB acquired 76% stake in the Chougule group-owned Aurangabad Breweries for about $18 million. Heineken has the option to raise its stake to 100% by the end of 2008. This is Asia-Pacific Breweries' second investment in South Asia, the first being in Sri Lanka in November 2005.

Aurangabad Breweries has two production units, one in Goa and another in Aurangabad, with a combined capacity of 2,50,000 hectolitres. It owns brands like Arlem Pilsner, Lager, Premium Lager and Diet, Cannon 10,000 Super Strong, Double Gold, Coromandel Super Strong and Goa Pilsner Dry and caters mainly to the Maharashtra/Goa market. Now Asia-Pacific Breweries' brands like Tiger, Anchor and Baron's Strong Brew could be introduced across the country.
