According to the final estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, India has recorded an increase in both area under oilseed cultivation and overall oilseed production for the 2024–25 agricultural year. This data was shared in a written reply to the Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, underscoring the progress made under government initiatives aimed at enhancing edible oil self-sufficiency and strengthening rural incomes.
The total area under oilseed cultivation increased from 301.92 lakh hectares in 2023–24 to 304.40 lakh hectares in 2024–25, reflecting farmers’ continued interest in oilseed crops. Meanwhile, oilseed production surged from 396.69 lakh tonnes to 429.89 lakh tonnes over the same period, indicating gains in productivity.
These improvements come against the backdrop of the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-OS), a comprehensive initiative approved in October 2024 to boost domestic oilseed output and reduce dependence on imports as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission. The NMEO-OS aims to enhance oilseed cultivation through integrated support, technology interventions, and market-linked policies.
To support farmers and protect them from market volatility, the government has also implemented Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and revised import tariffs for edible oils. These measures are intended to create stable price signals, incentivise cultivation, and improve returns for farmers across major oilseed-growing regions. Procurement under the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) scheme, which includes provisions for oilseeds, further reinforces income support mechanisms.
The steady growth in oilseed production and cultivated area reflects the effectiveness of policy interventions and farmers’ responsiveness to supportive measures. With continued focus on strengthening domestic output and enhancing market access, the government aims to drive sustainable growth in the edible oil sector, a key component of India’s food security and agricultural economy.
