Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently presided as the chief guest at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Kisan Samman Ceremony organised by the Kisan Trust at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, where he released a book and honoured outstanding farmers and organisations for their contributions to agriculture.

During his address, Chouhan paid tribute to Chaudhary Charan Singh, highlighting his lifelong dedication to farmer welfare, rural prosperity, and social justice. He underscored Chaudhary Singh’s role in the freedom movement, his efforts to abolish the zamindari system, and his visionary idea linking food security with employment for the poor.

The Minister also spoke about the recently enacted ‘Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural)’ (G Ram G Law), explaining that it expands employment guarantee from 100 to 125 days and focuses on tangible village development works such as building roads, drains, schools, and farm infrastructure.

Chouhan emphasised that the scheme’s success lies in meaningful utilisation of funds for rural transformation and not merely on digging work, and highlighted the classification of panchayats to allocate resources based on employment and development needs. He also stressed strengthening Lab-to-Land linkages, with plans for scientists to visit farms annually to interact with farmers and align research with their needs.

Addressing concerns about the sale of fake fertilisers, pesticides, and unauthorised biostimulants, Chouhan announced that the government will introduce a new bill in the upcoming Parliament session to curb these malpractices, with strict laws and actions against dishonest traders.

He called upon the Kisan Trust to suggest ideas for the upcoming budget session and five-year plans for agriculture, and invited inputs for the proposed Chintan Shivir, reaffirming the government’s commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to farmer welfare and rural progress.
