Six Agro-Food Parks to come up in Karnataka

a at an approximate cost of Rs 110 crore. Each park is estimated to cost around Rs 17-20 crore. Food Karnataka Limited, a government of Karnataka undertaking, will be the facilitator of these parks. In addition, the Union and state governments will also provide grants.

The parks are coming up at Malur in Kolar district, Jewargi in Gulbarga, Bagalkot and Kangrali in Belgaum, Maddur in Mandya, and Hiriyur in Chitradurga.

The processing industry will promote production of pulp, puree and juices apart from canned items from the fruits and vegetables sourced from farms strategically located in the vicinity of the six food parks. It will also manufacture snack foods and biscuits.

The Malur Park is promoted by Innova Agri Bio Park Ltd. at a cost of Rs 17-20 crore. The first phase will spread over 90 acres for the purpose of vegetable processing and biotechnology. The administrative block of the project will be ready by June 2006 and the second phase will be commissioned in October-November this year.

A unique feature of the Park is the irradiation processing facility with technical assistance of BARC and the department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The products to be processed here include mango, tomato, potato, chickoo, beans and brinjal.

Jewargi Agro Park in Gulbarga, promoted by Jewargi Agro Food Park Ltd, is a joint venture of Rayalseema Concrete Sleepers Pvt. Ltd of SS Patil Group at a cost of Rs 17.93 crore on an area of 105 acres. This unit will process millet, thoor dhal, urad dhal, groundnuts, sunflower and lime.

Kangrali in Belgaum is promoted by Belgaum Intl. Agro Food Park Ltd at a cost of Rs 18.69 crore on 100 acres to process fruit and vegetables.

Maddur in Mandya is promoted by Golden Harvest Food Parks Ltd at a cost of Rs 18 crore on 60 acres to process coconut, sugarcane and dairy.

Hiriyur in Chitradurga district is promoted by Akshay Food Park at a cost of Rs 16.39 crore on 66 acres. The construction of the administration block is under progress. The crops for processing here include pulses, oil seeds, spices, fruits (pomegranate), vegetables, and crops for bio-fuel.

Bagalkot is promoted by Green Food Park at a cost of Rs 19 crore on 100 acres where jowar, groundnut, chillies, onions, tamarind, papaya, chickoo, grapes, raisins limes and pomegranates.

The main objectives of Food Karnataka is to look into the policy aspects in processing. It will also oversee marketing of the products grown and processed. Each of these products will carry a 'Green Label' to indicate instant acceptability globally. The time frame to achieve this is two years, according to Dr V S Somanath, managing director, Food Karnataka Limited. The food parks will have all facilities such as cold storage, dry storage, packaging and forwarding, lab. R&D Centre, effluent treatment, weigh bridge, sorting, grading packing centers, technical assistance cells, among others.
