Phospholipids are essential components of the cell membranes. Their amphiphilic properties, i.e. hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail in the same molecule, permit the formation of a very stable bilayer membrane into which are included cholesterol, membrane proteins (receptors, ion channels, etc.)
