In a bold move to reinforce sustainability and promote indigenous brands, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah has issued a sweeping directive banning the use of plastic water bottles in all state government departments, offices and official functions. The circular, dated October 28, instructs every wing of the government to replace single-use plastic bottles with eco-friendly alternatives without delay.
Simultaneously, the CM has mandated that all government programmes and meetings from the secretariat to district-level events must use products from the state-owned Nandini line (produced by Karnataka Milk Federation or KMF). The intention to support local dairy farmers and strengthen the home-grown brand’s presence in official settings.
In his comments, Siddaramaiah emphasized that the earlier advisory on switching to eco-friendly alternatives must now be enforced rigorously. “Necessary steps should be taken to implement this measure strictly,” he instructed, reinforcing the state’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and indigenous industry support.
The policy has been welcomed by sustainability advocates who see the move as aligning governance with a low-waste, circular-economy agenda. At the same time, the blast for Nandini products signals a strategic push to bolster the state’s dairy sector and signal preference for locally produced goods in official procurement.
As the state rolls out this directive, departments will need to find viable replacements for plastic bottles be it reusable steel or glass bottles, water dispensers with refill systems, or other approved alternatives and ensure all government-sourced catering and refreshments feature Nandini milk, curd or allied dairy products.
With this dual thrust of environmental policy and support for the domestic dairy brand, Karnataka positions itself at the intersection of green governance and regional economic empowerment a model that may well set precedent for other Indian states.
