ICAR-IIHR emphasises guava cultivation to benefit both farmers & food processing industry

ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) highlights the importance of guava cultivation going by the processing benefits for both farmers and food product manufacturing industry. Even as it is an income generation for farmers, the processing of guava creates employment opportunities.

Guava is a popular tropical fruit, offering  several advantages in terms of processing. It has a high nutritional value as it is known for its essential nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, fibre, and antioxidants, making it a valuable ingredient for food product research and development.

Guava can be processed into various products such as juices, jams, jellies, nectars, and canned slices. Its versatility enhances its marketability and economic value. Processed guava products have a longer shelf life compared to fresh fruit, which reduces wastage and allows for distribution over longer distances. Therefore cultivating guava can provide a steady income stream for farmers, as the demand for processed guava products remains stable throughout the year, said ICAR-IIHR.

The processing of guava generates jobs  in rural areas, particularly in agro-processing units and allied industries. This is because it includes labour associated activities like making guava juice, jams, and other products which in turn contributes significantly to rural economies. It creates employment opportunities not only in the actual processing units but also in related industries such as packaging, transportation, and distribution. Moreover, the demand for guava products can stimulate agriculture and encourage farmers to cultivate more guava, thereby boosting the agricultural sector in rural areas. This makes guava processing a vital part of rural economic development, said Dr MV Dhananjaya, CEO, BESST-HORT (Business Entrepreneurship and Start-up Support through Technology in Horticulture ), a Technology Business Initiative (TBI) of ICAR-IIHR.

Going by the thrust given to guava, ICAR-IIHR through BESST-HORT is holding a training programme on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The course director is Dr Vasuki, principal scientist, Division of Fruit Crops. The course co-directors are Anushma PL and Dr Anupa T Scientists, Division of Fruit Crops. Dr Dhananjaya along with Dr Kalaivanan D, Treasurer, BESST-HORT are the course coordinators.

Guava is the fifth most important commercial fruit crop in the country, after, mango, pomegranate, banana and citrus. BESST-HORT officials said that guava is highly productive, remunerative and amenable for round the year production through canopy management. Being a highly nutritious fruit, there is a huge demand for such value-added products. Therefore the training for farmers, self-help groups (SHGs) and agri-horticultural graduates can help them explore income generation avenues. Further processed guava products have export potential, contributing to foreign exchange earnings for the country.

In particular promoting guava cultivation not only benefits farmers by providing a sustainable income but also supports the food processing industry by offering raw material for various nutritious and marketable products. This dual advantage underscores the importance of initiatives like those undertaken by ICAR-IIHR to promote guava cultivation and its processing, said BESST-HORT.
