GTRI concerned over inclusion of GM products in interim trade pact with US

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), an India based trade research group, has expressed concerns over the possibility of inclusion of genetically modified agricultural products in the proposed interim trade pact with India and the United States of America.
As per news reports, GTRI has cautioned that permitting import of GM crops as feed like soy meal and distillers dried grains with solubles, a by-product from ethanol production, can lead to cross contamination within Indian agricultural supply chain, affecting India’s GMO-free status.
The GTRI has stated that shipment rejections, higher testing costs, and erosion of India’s GMO-free status may get affected, if GM feed imports are allowed without robust traceability mechanisms.
GTRI highlighted that many countries including members of the EU prefer fully non-GM supply chains and allowing GM feed may hinder such trade prospects in key sectors like rice, tea, honey and spices.
India currently allows only BT Cotton as GM crop production, while import of GM grain, pulses, oilseeds and feeds is banned.
GTRI has said that any commitment to reduce agri tariff can put the Indian agri sector at risk.
