Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The FSSAI has decided to withdraw the notification with respect to the limit of copper in 'Hops Pellets’ used in production of beer. The food authority in a new order has directed food businesses to adhere to the limit of 20mg/kg.

In 2022, the food authority had issued a notification with respect to the Hops imported to India for use as an ingredient in manufacturing of beer and set a limit of max 1000ppm.

According to the current order, “All imported consignments of Hops Pellets shall conform with the copper limits of ‘foods not specified’ category under the FSS (Contaminants, Toxins, & Residues) Regulations 2011 i.e., 30 mg/kg.”

The Trade and International Cooperation Division, FSSAI, after receiving representation regarding Hops Pellets, used for beer production & not direct human consumption, in 2022, ordered that Hops Pellets shall conform to copper limit specified by the European Food Safety Authority standards, as well as all other FSSAI Standards.

As per EFSA, the specified limits for copper in Hops (dried), including Hops Pellets and un-concentrated powder at max was 1000ppm.
