FSSAI rolls out 'Single Sign On,' a feature for Customs at Kakinada and Talegaon

The FSSAI has rolled out ‘Single Sign On’ to FICS, a feature to the Customs Officers at Kakinada port and Talegaon for the southern and western region.
“For pilot roll out of the 'Single Sign On', two Points of entry Kakinada Port (Port Code: INKAK1) of Southern Region and Talegaon (Port Code: INTLG6) of Western Region, have been selected. This 'Single Sign On' will be implemented at the remaining 82 Points of Entry after successful completion of this pilot project,” reads the order issued by the FSSAI.
According to Manvesh Kumar, Director Trade and International Cooperation, FSSAI, the decision was taken to ensure food safety, transparency and ease of doing business in all the ‘Points of Entry’, FSSAI and CBIC have decided to integrate the non-FSSAI manned Points of Entry with Food Import Clearance System (FICS) of FSSAI and ICE-GATE of CBIC.
The FSSAI's Food Import Clearance System (FICS) is implemented at FSSAI manned Points of Entry and has digital, online and paperless processes. However, at present, a manual process is being followed at the Points of Entry where Customs Officials are working as Authorised Officers as these Points of Entry are not integrated with the Food Import Clearance System of FSSAI.
“To ensure the quality and safety of the imported food, FSSAI has an online system for clearance of food imports, Food Import Clearance System, which is seamlessly integrated with the Customs ICE-GATE (Indian Customs Electronic Commerce/Electronic Data Interchange (EC/EDI) Gateway) under SWIFT (Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade). Selective sampling & testing of imported food articles on the basis of risk profiling done by FSSAI is implemented at the Customs ICE-GATE,” said Kumar.
At present, food import in India is allowed through 162 Points of Entry (PoE). Out of 162 Points of Entry, FSSAI officials are working as 'Authorised Officers' at 78 points of entry and at remaining 84 points of entry, Customs officials have been notified as Authorised Officers by FSSAI for ensuring compliance to the provisions of FSSAI Act, 2006, and Regulations.
