The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has found 526 storage facilities of food businesses, including e-commerce, non-compliant, against whom notices were issued.
The national food authority has conducted 8,143 inspections of storage facilities in the last fiscal year including those operated by e-commerce food businesses and the non-compliant facilities were served notices.
According to the FSSAI, the e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) were required to ensure that all listed sellers are licensed/registered, provide mandatory food information (including principal display panel), and de-list non-compliant products and so on.
And to regulate online marketing companies engaged in selling food items, FSSAI, in 2018, specified procedures for the licensing and registration of e-commerce business operators along with their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, in the last two years, FSSAl has conducted 5 meetings with e-commerce food businesses operators wherein regulatory expectations such as training of delivery personnel, product labelling, traceability of warehouses and complaint handling were discussed.
According to a senior Government functionary, the FSSAI regularly takes up compliance and enforcement issues with Commissioners of Food Safety of all States through its Central Advisory Committee meetings, which generally take place once in 3 months.
It is pertinent to mention that in the past few months several cases of food safety violations at the storage facilities of e-commerce/quick-commerce platforms were reported from various places across the country.
