CFTRI felicitates four women entrepreneurs who have taken its technologies to propel their food businesses

CSIR- Central Food Technology Research Institute (CFTRI), has felicitated four women entrepreneurs who have taken its technologies to propel their food business ventures. These were Manasa from Saakya Foods, Hampapura Village, H.D. Kote Taluk; Parvathi and team from Asare Sanjeevini Food Products, Belikere village, Hunsur Taluk; G. Shilpa G from Hamasavahini Eco Products, Mysore and Anitha Sadanand of Mamma Mills, Himmavu Village, Nanjangud Taluk.

The four women have taken CSIR-CFTRI technologies and these entrepreneurs spoke about their success about their products of millets and fruits especially banana and gave samples of their products to Chief guests.

This follows close on the heels of International Women’s Day 2024, observed on March 8, where CFTRI, Mysuru celebrated ‘She Leads: Celebrating Women Achievers’ function recently. International Women's Day (IWD) theme for 2024 is 'Invest in Women: Accelerate progress’.

Dr S.Rathnamma, research associate, JSS, Mysore and Prema N. Mahendrakar from Mysore were the chief guests and Dr Sridevi Annapurna Singh, director, CSIR-CFTRI presided over the function. Dr Poornima Priyadarshini, principal scientist, CFTRI welcomed the gathering and presented the importance of International Women’s Day and also about the function.

Dr Rathnamma is the first woman from the Soliga community in Karnataka to earn a Ph.D., and she works with the Sai Pragathi Foundation to educate tribals and empower women, and organizes vocational training for women. She also raises awareness about sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder that has killed many people in her tribal community.

She also emphasised the importance of Food and nutrition with respect to various indigenous leafy vegetables and tubers grown and available in the forest area and also dwelt upon finger millet (Ragi) and 10 varieties of it with reference to   Nutritional health aspect.

Prema N. Mahendrakar who lives in CFTRI Employees layout, Bogadi, Mysore, makes cloth bags under the Anmol project instead of plastic bags and distributes needy people. During Covid pandemic she made more than 20,000 cloth bags and emphasised the importance of usage of cloth bags instead of plastic considering with environment.

Dr Sridevi Annapurna Singh, the first woman director of CSIR-CFTRI gave her presidential remarks and talked about how women should respect herself and feel strong. She also emphasised women empowerment and CFTRI Technologies taken especially by women entrepreneurs and also ill effects of micro plastics in the current scenario.
