The Bombay High Court has sought responses from Maharashtra & Union Government on a PIL seeking cancer warning on labels for alcoholic beverages.
The PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed by a Pune resident has mentioned that the missing cancer warning on alcohol bottle, adds to the danger of health risk in consuming alcohol.
According to reports, the PIL also calls it a violation of Consumer rights to know about the product.
The PIL adds that the Consumer has the right to know about the product in their 'pristine and entire form'.
The PIL also referred to a report by WHO which highlighted the deaths of over 30 lakh individuals due to alcohol consumption.
The petition also claimed that alcohol has been termed as class 1 carcinogen by the WHO.
Meanwhile it is learnt that the FSSAI is contemplating the inclusion of such warning on labels of alcoholic beverages. And it will start discussion with the stakeholders.
Alcoholic beverages are governed under the FSS Alcoholic Beverages Regulations wherein presently it is mandatory to mention a warning "Consumption of Alcohol is Injurious to Health. Be Safe -Don't Drink and Drive."
Similarly, the labels can't have any nutritional information and health claims.
