Despite FSSAI's appeal, calcium carbide laden fruits remains a challenge

Despite of  the apex food regulator asking traders not to use calcium carbide for fruit ripening, the use of such chemical agent remained rampant amongst fruit vendors.

In Assam, one quintal mangoes ripened by calcium carbide was seized by the local food authority in Fancy Bazar area in Guwahati.

As per local reports, the State Food Safety officials launched an operation and raided fruit vendors in busiest market.

Accordingly, the  chemically ripened mangoes were confiscated by the authorities, which poses significant health risk.

FSSAI has also asked the people to report to local authorities if they find any such food safety hazard.

"In case any use of calcium carbide or any wrong practice of using ripening agents for artificial ripening of fruits is noticed by the consumers, the same may be brought to the notice of concerned State Commissioners of Food Safety of state," reads the FSSAI's statement.
