Carlsberg India, in collaboration with WaterAid India, has expanded its water conservation initiative to Kolkata, Aurangabad, and Hyderabad, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable water management. This initiative follows the success of their 2023 water-replenishment program in Mysuru, Karnataka, which positively impacted over 34,000 people.

The expanded program will cover 30 Gram Panchayats (villages) across three states, benefiting 51,000 individuals and aiming to replenish over 320,000 m³ of water annually. With a focus on groundwater recharge, efficient water use, and community-driven conservation, the initiative will help address critical water challenges, including excessive groundwater extraction and climate-induced rainfall disruptions.

The program emphasizes active community participation in sustainable water management through reviving lakes and ponds to improve water retention and natural flow, Installing rooftop rainwater collection systems for drinking and domestic use, with excess water directed towards aquifer recharge, Using rainwater to replenish deeper aquifers, ensuring long-term water security, Empowering communities to assess water needs and promote responsible consumption, Engaging local stakeholders through educational initiatives on water conservation.

Recognizing water as a key resource in brewing, Carlsberg India aims to replenish the same amount of water it consumes at its breweries through community-driven conservation projects.

"Our collaboration with WaterAid fosters a resilient future by promoting sustainable water management," said Nilesh Patel, managing director of Carlsberg India. "We remain committed to making a lasting impact on the communities surrounding our breweries."

VK Madhavan, chief executive of WaterAid India, emphasized the initiative's role in enhancing water security: "This partnership strengthens our mission to provide reliable access to drinking water, particularly in water-stressed regions. Our community-driven approach will contribute to a more water-resilient future."

The insights gained from this initiative will support local and district governments in scaling up similar projects, paving the way for a sustainable and water-secure India.
