Sharad Pawar, union minister of agriculture and food processing industries, on Tuesday, urged Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to adopt demand-driven approach rather than supply-driven approach for economic and social uplift of rural areas of the country.

\The minister was speaking after inaugurating the 7th National Conference of Krishi Vigyan Kendras–2012 at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Pawar said that due to the efforts of ICAR, SAUs and KVKs, we were now self-sufficient in agriculture. “Last fiscal year figure of 257 million tons of food grain production was achieved, which was highest since 1947. Despite, drought in certain parts of the country this figure would close to 250 million tons this year,” he said, announcing that there would not be any shortfall of food grains.

Pawar also inaugurated the exhibition for showcasing various farm technologies. KVKs were awarded for exceptional work carried out in research and extension activities. Books and DVDs were also released on the occasion.

Dr Charan Das Mahant, union minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries, admired the role played by KVKs in effective transfer of technologies from lab to farm. “We should reach the unreached,” he remarked.

Dr S Ayyappan, secretary, DARE, and director-general, ICAR, said that a plan has been chalked out to introduce curriculum of agriculture at school level so that interest of young generation in rural areas could be retained in agriculture. “We are also giving special emphasis on secondary agriculture in the 12th Plan,” he explained.
