ASEAN's agriculture meet to focus on greater utilisation of resources

The second ASEAN-India ministerial meeting on agriculture and forestry – jointly organised by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – commenced at NASC Complex, New Delhi on October 17, 2012 and will conclude on October 19, 2012.

The ministers, vice-ministers, SOM leaders and senior officials of the ASEAN nations and India participating in the meet with a view to collaborate more effectively for greater utilisation of resources in agriculture, industries and trade.

Sharad Pawar, India's minister of agriculture and food processing industries, and Vilayvanh Phomkhe, minister of agriculture, Lao PDR and co-chair, inaugurated the ASEAN-India Agri-Expo along with the ministers and representatives of the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries.

S Ayyappan, secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), and director-general, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Rajesh Ranjan, director, DARE and senior officials of DARE and ICAR were also present on the occasion.

The objective of the exposition concurrently organised with the meeting was to showcase technologies of the region and to further promote and intensify cooperation between India and ASEAN nations in agriculture, forestry and allied sectors. Prominent institutions, industries and R&D organisations of ASEAN region and India are displaying relevant technologies and products having potential of adoption and exchange.

Dignitaries also launched India-ASEAN News on Agriculture and Forestry, a bi-annual newsletter published by ICAR. The newsletter will act as a window of activities, achievements, agricultural research information and policy issues related to the member-countries. Pawar, in his message, hoped that this newsletter will provide a strong interactive platform for mutual benefit of the ASEAN member countries and India.

The Association of South-East Nations (ASEAN) is a group of ten nations – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – which collectively aim to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through mutual cooperation. ASEAN-India working group on agriculture aims to facilitate promotion of joint research for development of technologies for increasing production and productivity in agricultural and allied systems.
