Metaflex Doors and Jindal Mectec have launched CA Star Controlled Atmosphere (CA) doors, in India.

The two companies have come together to manufacture indigenously designed CA doors here in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. CA Door is one of the crucial components of CA storage and was imported till date for any such requirements. CA maintains the quality and freshness of the items without the use of any chemicals. Under CA conditions, products can be stored for two to four times longer than usual. CA storage is a concept where the atmosphere inside the storage area is controlled by maintaining the right balance of gases by reducing the level of O2 and increasing CO2.

According to Rajesh Sikka, MD, Metaflex Doors India Pvt. Ltd, the Made in India doors would reduce financial burden by 40% on cost of CA doors, a saving of around one lakh per door.

Currently the market size for CA Doors in India is 400-600 doors per year and Metaflex can manufacture 2,000 doors in a year at its facility in NCR, according to Sikka. He stated, “CA door is a very crucial element in maintaining the gases balance in tact inside the storage area. The specialised gasket used in our CA Star takes care of all imperfections and gives 100% gas tight sealing. The application areas for CA Star are diverse like fresh produce storages like fruits & vegetables, disinfestations sector, biological storages and storage areas that are using technical gases.”

Fresh produce worth Rs 13,300 crore in India is thrown away every year because of the lack of adequate cold storage facilities and refrigerated transport; fruits and vegetables account for the largest portion of that wastage. According to data compiled in a new report by a leading market research agency, 18% per cent of India's fruit and vegetable production is wasted annually. The value of fruits, vegetables and grains wastage put together in India was counted at Rs 44,000 crore annually by the study.

He added, “With this indigenous product, the customers will get better quality technological product at a stable price. It is our continuous endeavour to offer the best solution to the customers’ needs. With this innovative product, manufactured in our own state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, we strive to contribute our share to the ‘Make In India’ initiative.”

Speaking on the occasion, Pawan Jindal, chairman, Jindal Mectec, said, “The decision of joining hands came from the market in-depth analysis, challenges from crucial market factors like import hassles/challenges, logistics issues and incremental cost which were the major challenges faced by us, affecting the price of the product and eventually affecting the customers. With our new association, we look for leveraging each of ours’ domain expertise and we are sure that we will not only overcome from such challenges but will also positively change the market dynamics of cold chain industry.”

CA doors play a major role in controlled storage of fruits and vegetables such as apples (12 months), pears (10 – 12 months), Kiwifruit (9 – 10 months), plums, blueberries, strawberries, avocado, pineapple, banana, and citrus fruits ensuring a longer shelf life. Such doors are also used by disinfestations sector for storing various products such as seeds (wheat, rice, coffee, pulses) nuts (walnuts, peanuts) dried foodstuffs (teas, herbs etc.) and even beverages (wine, juices etc.), biological storages and storage areas using technical gases.
