World Bread Day celebrated by D Y Patil Hospitality and Tourism School

fiogf49gjkf0d World Bread Day was celebrated recently by D Y Patil University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Studies, Nerul.
There was a display-cum-competition for the students, co-organised by chefs Siraj M Shaikh, Hemant Pednekar, Shilpa D Vanire and Rushika Sulakhe. It was not only aimed at imparting bakery skills, but also showcasing the students’ talent.
Shaikh said, “Such events have always been a part of this department. It gives our students an opportunity to be innovative, creative, and ready for the hospitality industry.”
Pednekar - who is vastly-experienced, from The French Bakery, London, and now a member of the D Y Patil Hospitality team - opined that World Bread Day should be celebrated across the country.
“Culinary competitions are common, but the World Bread Day competition is a new initiative of the D Y Patil Hospitality team,” he added.
Students of fifteen hotel management institutes across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai participated in the 2014 essay of the Master Baker Challenge Competition, one of the highlights of the event. It was judged by Sudhir Kanse, pastry chef, Bhusa Bong.
Sheila Raheja College of Hotel Management bagged the first prize; ITM College of Hotel Management was the first runner-up, and Don Bosco College of Hotel Management was third.
The winning team comprised Aaryan Sharma, Johar Kachwala and Siddharth R Nair; Rohan Sharma, Himanshu Awasthi and Sairaj Dere represented ITM, and Olvi Pinto, Dexter Rodrigues and Prashant Sahu represented the second runner-up. They were given participation certificates.
On display was a sugar art display of a football stadium. A soccer city was recreated by the chefs and budding chefs. Besides this, there was a display of breads from different countries.
