fiogf49gjkf0d The National Geographic Society and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have agreed to work together to provide information and raise awareness about hunger and nutrition.
In particular, when reporting on food and agriculture, the magazine would utilise food and agricultural statistics, as well as trends and data sets, sourced from the United Nations’ (UN) agency’s statistical service, FAOStat.
Speaking at the agreement’s signing ceremony at the FAO headquarters in Rome, FAO director-general José Graziano da Silva noted that National Geographic and FAO shared the view that wide access to reliable information was a key tool in the fight for human rights, and specifically when it came to the right to food.
Chris Johns, chief content officer, National Geographic, said, “National Geographic’s reporting on food greatly benefits by our partnership with the FAO, and we are very pleased to be formalising a longer-term relationship.”
The FAO-National Geographic partnership envisages cooperation, a regular dialogue and access to the former’s expertise, knowledge exchange, content-sharing, cross promotion, joint activities and participation at events and on publishing platforms.
The magazine’s in-depth eight-month ‘Future of Food’ series began in May 2014, and has included food and agricultural statistics and trends on topics such as feeding megacities in a world of changing demographics, reducing food loss and waste and global forestry issues. FAO also provides material for articles and graphics to natgeofood.com.
At the UN agency’s headquarters, FAO and National Geographic inaugurated a travelling photo exhibit showcasing the Future of Food series.
An expanded version of the exhibit - a project involving FAO and National Geographic Italia, the Society’s Italian chapter - would go on show at Rome’s Palazzo delle Esposizioni on November 13, 2014.
This exhibit would coincide with the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2), the high-level inter-governmental meeting, which is co-organised by FAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and would take place in Rome between November 19 and 21, 2014.
FAO and National Geographic plan to collaborate on a number of other initiatives including World Soil Day (December 5), which would coincide with the launch of the International Year of Soils 2015.
National Geographic is publishing a free iPad app, containing all currently published stories from the magazine’s food coverage, accompanied by a short video, titled ‘Food by the Numbers’. A world diet interactive would be published online.
