J P Meena, additional secretary, ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI), insisted that the mega food park scheme it initiated a couple of years ago was not a failure. On the contrary, he said it has been making rapid progress, and MoFPI has been able to attract investments from large firms to set up units in these facilities.

He said, “MoFPI has been taking initiatives to make mega food parks operational across India. Of the 56 facilities that have received the ministry’s nod, about 25 are at various stages of implementation. Two established mega food parks – Patanjali (in Uttarakhand) and Srini (in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh) – are playing a key role in the sector’s growth.”

“The Patanjali food park houses 19 units, whose combined annual turnover amounts to approximately Rs 500 crore. The facility in the south houses seven units, whose combined annual turnover ranges between Rs 75 crore and Rs 100 crore,” Meena informed.

“A third facility (in Tumkur, Karnataka) was inaugurated recently by prime minister Narendra Modi. It has been proposed that mega food parks would be set up in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal. These are likely to become operational by the end of the year,” he added.

“A number of big companies are enquiring about investments in mega food parks. Private giants like Future Group, ITC, PepsiCo and the Coca-Cola Company are looking at investing in these facilities. We are coming up with initiatives to encourage investors from India as well as overseas to come forward and invest in the same,” Meena said.
