fiogf49gjkf0d Nirmala Sitharaman, minister of state (independent charge), commerce and industry, stressed upon the need to promote domestically, considering the growing demand for them in the local market at the launch of the composite promotion plan for spices, including the production and release of eight promotional films, a coffee-table book and a tagline (Indian Cuisine Symphony of Spices) at a Spice Board of India-organised event at Samudrika Hall, Kochi, recently.
She also called for a composite approach for promotion of spices as many of the regions in the North-East are doing very well in growing spices. She added that it was important that the stakeholders took steps to develop this discreet but all-pervasive market in India.
This campaign aims at enhancing the goodwill for Indian cuisine and spices and catalysing the realisation of better prices by spice farmers, which, in turn, would have a far-lying social impact on the farming community of India.
Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy and Ernakulam Member of Parliament Prof K V Thomas were present at the event, where the welcome address was delivered by Spice Board chairman A S Jayathilak, and the vote of thanks was proposed by S Kannan, the board’s finance director.
Chandy applauded the timely steps taken by Spices Board to safeguard the interests of the cardamom industry. But he raised his concerns over the slowdown in the production of spices in Kerala, and called for a collective effort from all the stakeholders to address the challenges in the sector. The chief minister also probed into the possibility of a collaborative project involving Kerala Tourism and Spice Trails for the benefit of both parties.
