fiogf49gjkf0d The 2014 essay of lunch!, which would commence at the Business Design Centre in London on September 23, would feature a host of players from across the food-to-go retailing and contract catering industries. The show would conclude on September 24, 2014.
According to the organisers, the latest speakers to join this year’s line-up are Corrado Accardi, founder, Pizza Rossa; Darren Westlake, chief executive officer and co-founder, CrowdCube; Martyn Herriott, chairman and executive director, Beverage Standards Association (BSA); and Cyril Lavenant, director, Foodservice UK and France at the NPD Group.
The show’s Working lunch! Theatre (sponsored by Magrini) already includes previously confirmed sessions by Henry Dimbleby, co-founder, Leon and founding director, Sustainable Restaurant Association; Steve Flanagan, UK marketing and category director, Starbucks, and Sarah Doyle, brand director, EAT.
Crowdfunding – The future of food-to-go?
Thanks to their universal appeal, food and beverages have proved to be one of the most popular categories of crowdfunding investment, offering brand new start-ups (and established businesses) an alternative way to get all-important funding. And Pizza Rossa is a standout example of how successful an alternative it can be.
The company made headlines last year when it broke the European record for equity-based crowdfunding for a start-up, raising £440,000 in 17 days from 119 investors through Crowdcube. Since then, Accardi has opened his first gourmet pizza al taglio grab-and-go outlet in London’s Leadenhall Market, and is planning more openings by the end of the year.
Allergens legislation update
The European Union’s (EU) new Food Information Regulations (FIR), which would come into effect in December, are also the subject of a timely update at lunch! (slated for 4:20pm on September 24).
Hosted by Wendy Duncan, research and development (R&D) deploy manager, Unilever Food Solutions, the session is designed to help all food service operators (irrespective of their size) prepare for the changes.
Under the new law, it is a legal requirement for allergen information (the EU’s top fourteen) to be provided for all foods that are sold onsite (non-packed or pre-packed for direct sale).
Other notable sessions
Susanne Currid, marketing consultant and social media consultant, The Loop, would speak at a session titled ‘Engage, Grow and Profit with Social Media’, while Lavenant’s topic would be ‘Food-to-Go: London versus the Rest of the UK’, and Herriott would chair a BSA panel debate titled ‘How to Inprove Hot Beverages and Profit in Your Business’.
