PepsiCo plans largest and most water-efficient beverage plant in India

PepsiCo India recently announced their plans to build a new greenfield beverage manufacturing plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Upon completion, it would be the cola major’s largest plant in India. The company intends to invest over Rs 1,200 crore in the project, which is a part of its plan to invest Rs 33,000 crore in India, along with its partners, by 2020.

PepsiCo India will deploy state-of-the-art technologies with emphasis on production efficiencies, environment protection and safety. The plant would be PepsiCo's most water-efficient beverage plant in India, and the company and also aims to procure Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the greenfield facility.

D Shivakumar, chairman and chief executive officer, PepsiCo India, made the announcement in Hyderabad. N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister; Geetha Reddy, major industries minister; K Pradeep Chandra, principal secretary and commissioner for industrial promotion, and Ravi Sana Reddy, chief executive officer, Sri City, were also present.

Shivakumar also announced that PepsiCo India would substantially increase the sourcing of mango pulp from Andhra Pradesh over the next six years. A source from the Andhra Pradesh chief minister’s office said, “Reddy welcomed the investment by PepsiCo in the state, and he is extremely pleased that the company has chosen the southern state to set up the largest plant.”

“The proposed plant will be completed in three phases, and once fully operational, it would provide employment to over 8,000 people. Reddy is very happy that the company has also decided to considerably increase its mango sourcing from Andhra Pradesh for its juice-based beverages, which would benefit thousands of farmers from the state,” he added.

Shivakumar said, “India is a high-priority market for PepsiCo, and we see tremendous opportunities to expand our food and beverage business here in the coming years. This state-of-the-art beverage facility is a key part of our growth plans for the Indian market, and we are delighted to locate it in Andhra Pradesh, an investor-friendly and progressive state with a receptive government.”

“Sri City is ideally located and offers the perfect opportunity to harness the benefits of superior connectivity, great infrastructure and an ample talent pool, which are prerequisites for every industry. Andhra Pradesh is also a large beverage market with robust demand througout the year,” he added.

“The Sri City plant will boost our production capacity and support the growing demand for PepsiCo India's beverage products in Andhra Pradesh and peninsular India,” Shivakumar added. The plant, which would be set up in the state will manufacture a range of beverages, including fruit juice-based drinks, carbonated soft drinks and sport drinks.
