The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has ensured the smooth implementation of the Food Security Act by establishing an administrative building in Guwahati. On Tuesday, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone of the building, in the presence of K V Thomas, minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution.

Presently, the north-east has 77 FCI depots operational, with a total capacity of 4,68,000 million tonne (MT). Besides this, 20 projects are currently under construction in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. These are expected to augment the storage capacity by about 1,25,060 MT, of which 53,000 MT would be completed by March 2014.

The corporation has been serving the needs of public distribution system (PDS) beneficiaries through annual induction of 37 lakh MT foodgrains to the north-eastern states in the face of geographical constraints and developing infrastructure, besides providing remunerative prices to farmers, and promoting sports by recruiting and offering stipendiary benefits to young sportspersons in the area.

Manipur

K V Thomas, minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, inaugurated a new granary with a capacity of 5,000 million tonne in Manipur on Wednesday. Okram Ibobi Singh, chief minister of the north-eastern state, was also present.

Presently, five Food Corporation of India (FCI) depots are operational in the state with a capacity of 33,090MT.

With this, the corporation is effectively serving the needs of 4,06,593 public distribution system (PDS) beneficiaries through annual induction of about 2.35 lakh MT foodgrains to Manipur, despite geographical and infrastructural bottlenecks.

After the construction of seven new FCI godowns in the state, the total storage capacity would increase to 37,500MT, and every revenue district in the state would have at least one FCI godown.
