fiogf49gjkf0d Equinox Labs organised a workshop titled 'How to face a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) audit' in Mumbai recently. The objective of the workshop was to address issues related to food safety and to assure full compensation to victims in case of injury and death.
Suresh Deshmukh, joint commissioner, FDA Maharashtra, said, “The Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006, lays down provisions for registration and licensing modalities for food business operators (FBOs) till February 5, 2014. These will ensure the decentralisation of licensing of food products and easy issuance of licenses within the time frame of two months.”
He further informed, "Small food business operators, whose annual turnover is less than Rs 12 lakh, need to register. They would not require a license to operate.” The Act would ensure that the regulatory requirements are applied consistently and equitably across all sectors and groups.
There are provisions in the Act for penalties for various offenses. FBOs are liable to pay Rs 1 lakh for unhygienic conditions and food containing extraneous matter; Rs 2 lakh for sub-standard food, Rs 3 lakh for misbranding; Rs 10 lakh for misleading advertisements, and a fine not exceeding Rs 2 lakh for non-compliance with the provisions of FSSA, 2006.
In order to make the audit system more accountable, the Act states that FBOs have water testing reports, training records, medical testing reports, maintenance reports, pest control reports, purchase orders, cleaning and sanitisation records and food temperature records.
