With onset of rainfall likely to be late and continuing high temperature this year, tea growers in Assam are faced with the challenge of reaching their tea production target of 1,000 million kilos. Tea production in the state had declined by 20 per cent till May.

This was informed to FnB News by Bidyananda Barkakoty, chairman, North Eastern Tea Association (NETA), in a chat over telephone.

“Unfortunately, the production in Assam has declined by 20 per cent which could be a hurdle in reaching the estimated target of about 1,000 million kilos,” Barkakoty said.

He said that due to decline in the production from November to December the estimated target could not be achieved in the previous year adding that out of the country's total production of tea of about 980 million kilos, Assam contributed about 51-52 per cent – 508 million kilos of tea.
