Saturday, 12 November, 2011, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
His life has been a real rag to riches story. Dharamvir Kamboj, away from his village Dhamla of Yamnanagar in Haryana, used to pull a rickshaw on the streets of Delhi till the year 1987. With little education on hand, his conviction and innovative mind today has made him a successful entrepreneur with a global reach.

Life has come a full circle for Dharamvir as he met success at his doorstep after roaming on the streets of the metro city to make a few hundred bucks. Inventor of the portable multipurpose processing unit, he is now providing employment to three dozen women of his village at his aloe vera and amla processing plant.

The idea of inventing this machine came when he observed the women in his village peeling herbs with their hands. "They used to cuts their hands besides being able to process very low quantity of herbs."

"The development of the machine has changed my life completely. Combination of grinder, processor and juicer, the processors has 200 kg per hour processing capacity for herbal products," he said, adding that besides selling more than 55 machines in India, he already exported a few to Kenya.

With mere two acres of land at his native village, Dharamvir started growing aloe vera and amla after the development of machine. "I am now producing juices, gel, sweets, shampoo, face creams from amla and aloe vera and selling them in various parts of the country. The machine has made it possible to produce these products at a large scale," he added. "Besides, more than 35 women are directly employed in my business and many in and around my village have started growing amla and aloe vera. This has made them prosperous too," he said.

Dharamvir was awarded by various organisations including the ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) with Farmer Scientist award in the year 2010 by agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.

Dharamvir said that the state horticulture department now provided a subsidy on the machine developed by him, which was sold at a price of Rs 1.35 lakh. His innovation also received the fifth place at the National Competition of Grassroots Innovations and Traditional Knowledge organised by the National Innovation Foundation in the year 2009.

"I am earning around Rs 2 lakh per month," proud Dharamvir said.

Dharamvir's story will continue to keep common man's hope alive that determination and hard work can change destinies.
