Describing global warming and climate change as a major threat to food security, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar urged the scientists to develop new farm technologies to increase agricultural output.

"Global warming and climate change have emerged as a major threat to agriculture throughout the world. Bihar too has borne the brunt of climate change and suffered from the twin natural disasters of drought and floods in recent years resulting in a decrease of agricultural output," he said.

In addition to the shortfall in the food production, the state and its people were likely to face water crisis in the near future as the ground water was declining and the recharge due to rain waters was not taking place.

The chief minister urged the scientists to develop new technolgies to enable the farmers achieve higher yields in their farms. "The right to food security for all has become important and the state government is committed to ensure the same."

"The newly developed farm technologies should also be sufficiently publicised in the state so that the farmers know about these and use the same to step up their farm production," the minister said.

Referring to the various incentives and assistance offered to the farmers under different schemes, he said that the agriculture department should provide the benefits to all interested farmers without discrimination and favour.
