China now has food safety commission

A food safety commission has been set up by China’s state council, to assess the food safety and to co-ordinate the work in food safety. The council will make food safety policies and guide the departments involved in food safety. The state council vice premier, Li Keqiang will be the director of the commission.
Li Keqiang said at the first meeting that food safety is closely related to people's health and safety, as well as economic development and social harmony, and government should be responsible for the people and carry out food safety law.
Li added that a campaign will be carried out across the country in 2010 on food safety, focusing on food additives, food processing, distribution, import and export, and all other sectors of the food industry.
Li also said that all the melamine contaminated milk powder products currently circulating on the market should be totally destroyed and anyone involved severely punished.
