WPI for all commodities for Dec 2018 drops by 1.4% to 120.1 from 121.8

The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) for the month of December 2018 declined by 1.4 per cent to 120.1 (provisional) from 121.8 (provisional) for the previous month.

Inflation
The annual rate of inflation, based on the monthly WPI, stood at 3.80 per cent (provisional) for the month of December 2018 (over December 2017) as compared to 4.64 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and 3.58 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build-up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 3.27 per cent compared to a build-up rate of 2.21 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The inflation for important commodities/commodity groups is indicated in Annex-I and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarised below:

Primary articles (Weight: 22.62 per cent)
The index for this major group declined by 1.8 per cent to 134.7 (provisional) from 137.2 (provisional) for the previous month.

The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the food articles group declined by 1.4 per cent to 144 (provisional) from 146.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of fruits and vegetables (eight per cent), peas/chawali (seven per cent), condiments and spices (two per cent) and paddy (one per cent).

However, the price of betel leaves (14 per cent), arhar (nine per cent), maize and poultry chicken (six per cent each), gram, fish-marine and urad (four per cent each), jowar and masur (three per cent each), bajra and coffee (two per cent each) and rajma, pork, moong, fish-inland, barley, ragi and tea (one per cent each) moved up.

The index for the non-food articles group declined by 0.1 per cent to 124.5 (provisional) from 124.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of guar seed (six per cent), raw cotton and castor seed (three per cent each), groundnut seed (two per cent) and raw rubber, rape and mustard seed and raw silk (one per cent each).

However, the price of gingelly seed, floriculture and mesta (five per cent each), copra (coconut) (four per cent), safflower (kardi seed) and linseed (three per cent each), raw jute, skins (raw) and soyabean (two per cent each) and coir fibre, raw wool, hides (raw), sunflower and cotton seed (one per cent each) moved up.

Manufactured products (Weight: 64.23 per cent)
The index for this major group declined by 0.4 per cent to 118.3 (provisional) from 118.8 (provisional) for the previous month.
The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the manufacture of food products group declined by one per cent to 127.7 (provisional) from 129 (provisional) for the previous month due to the lower prices of molasses (six per cent), gur, honey and coffee powder with chicory (five per cent each), rice bran oil and palm oil (four per cent each), powder milk, manufacture of processed ready-to-eat food and cotton seed oil (three per cent each), sugar, butter, other meats [preserved/processed], buffalo meat [fresh/frozen] and castor oil (two per cent each) and  manufacture of prepared animal feeds, instant coffee, vanaspati, ghee, sooji (rawa), mustard oil, groundnut oil, processed tea and manufacture of bakery products (one per cent each).

However, the price of wheat bran and manufacture of starches and starch products (four per cent each), manufacture of health supplements (three per cent), gram powder (besan), chicken/duck [dressed-fresh/frozen], copra oil and bagasse (two per cent each) and wheat flour (atta) and manufacture of macaroni, noodles, couscous and similar farinaceous products (one per cent each) moved up.
 
The index for the manufacture of beverages group rose by 0.2 per cent to 122 (provisional) from 121.7 (provisional) for the previous month, due to the higher prices of aerated drinks/soft drinks (including soft drink concentrates) (one per cent). However, the prices of bottled mineral water and beer (one per cent each) declined.

WPI Food Index (Weight: 24.38 per cent)
The rate of inflation based on the WPI Food Index, consisting of food articles from the primary articles group and food products from the manufactured products group increased from -1.96 per cent in November 2018 to 0.07 per cent in December 2018.

Final index for the month of October 2018 (Base year: 2011-12=100)
For the month of October 2018, the final Wholesale Price Index for all commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 122 as compared to 121.7 (provisional) and the annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 5.54 per cent as compared to 5.28 per cent (provisional) respectively, as reported on November 14, 2018.
