What’sup!, South Kolkata’s latest three-tier terrace cafe which boasts of an alfresco bar, gives patrons an opportunity to dip their feet in a Jacuzzi, sip their favourite drink, smoke the hookah of their choice and either watch the screening of a match or listen to live music or a DJ, while socialising with friends.
It offers a host of reasonably-priced mocktails and cocktails (such as Djinn in a Matka, Xtra Long Island Beach Tea and Balti Tea) and finger foods or full-course meals. The menu comprises Indian fare like Tandoor dishes, kebabs, Murg Malai Makkhanwala and Prawn Bhaapa, and international cuisines such as Continental, Italian, Mexican, American and Oriental.
Debraj Dey, Anirban Sengupta and Anamika Sengupta, the cafe’s owners, felt that décor uplifts one’s mood, while good food satisfies taste buds, and both are equally important for a great experience. Keeping customers spoilt for choices made them keep coming back and innovation is the only way to break the monotony - be it in changing the look and feel of the ambiance or in introducing newer food items to give customers more choice.
The best innovative thing they have done for their brand is that they have kept innovating. From adding an uppermost deck to upper deck terraces to the already-existing lower deck (thereby amplifying the 200- seater lounge viewing experience), to converting a regular seating room to a full aqua bubble bar, and from making a wash basin from a used car tyre to installing a full glass staircase connecting the upper and lower deck terrace, all these innovations have been introduced within a span of one year, and have considerably upped the experience quotient for their patrons.
They have kept the innovation alive significantly in the events they organise. Staying true to their desire to be India’s first multi-cultural café, they kept showcasing cultures from across the globe in an Indian backdrop, from #WhatsUpRussia (in association with the Russian Consulate), wherein they showcased a glimpse of the Russian way of life, their food, music and how they party, to hosting a series of #PartyWithBetty – our ode to the vivacious Betty Cooper of the iconic Archie’s comics fame, wherein all servers on that day were white skinned blondes representing Betty Cooper, and from giving Kolkatans a Munich style experience through #WhatsUpGermany - Oktoberfest (in association with the German Consulate) to having Jean Du Voyage, a French turntablist of international fame perform live through their event #Frenchescapade, which they hosted in association with the Alliance Francaise Du Bengali.
All these have helped the brand gain considerable mindshare and have been well-written about across media. In just a year, What’sup! bagged several awards in categories like Kolkata’s Best Alfresco Bar, the excellence award and more.
