Uttarakhand court levies fine on Patanjali Ghee for failing quality tests

Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
A local court in Uttarakhand has levied fine of Rs 1.40 lakh on Patanjali Ghee and associates for failing quality tests.

The matter is related to a sample collected by the food safety officials from a local store in Kasni in Pithoragarh district in October 2020.

The samples were initially sent to Rudrapur food testing lab and later sent to Ghaziabad laboratory of FSSAI in 2021. In both reports, the samples failed the quality parameters.

And subsequently a case was registered in the local court which imposed the fine  imposed on Patanjali.

Meanwhile, Patanjali Ayurved has issued a clarification on the issue.

"The referral laboratory was not NABL accredited to test cow ghee, and therefore, the testing conducted there is legally unacceptable. The parameters based on which the sample was declared failed were not applicable at the time, and therefore, their use is legally invalid. The retest was conducted after the expiry date of the sample, which is invalid as per law," the clarification read.

The clarification added that an appeal is being filed against this order in the Food Safety Tribunal as nowhere in this decision is Patanjali cow ghee declared harmful for consumption.
