Quality & productivity in food processing industry in focus at webinars

India has enabled the ecosystem to successfully implement the vision of promoting quality and productivity in Indian food processing industry, according to Reema Prakash, Joint Secretary, Department of Food Processing, Government of India. Prakash was speaking at the recently- organised Udyog Manthan webinars.
The webinars have been organised by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in association with Quality Council of India (QCI), National Productivity Council (NPC), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Industry Chambers.
The webinars focussed on promoting quality and productivity in the Indian food processing industry with leads to identify challenges, best practices and experiences of the selected champion sectors, in order to identify challenges related to achieving quality and productivity faced by the Indian food processing industry. With a view to arriving at a suggested way forward, thereby promoting the vision of ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.
Prakash observed, “India has enabled the ecosystem to successfully implement this vision. As the country, you all know, is very big raw material based, largest producer of milk and second horticulture, crops and fish in the world, it is also the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices and spices products.”
“The Government of India has recently announced reforms under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan giving a big boost to the agri food sector of the country and retreating government strong partnership approach to build trust among all stakeholders from farm to food,” she added.
“Indian industry to focus on improving quality and productivity, and undertake brainstorming sessions on these aspects so that the country gets recognition as high-quality and efficient manufacturer, trader and service providers,” she said.
Piruz Khambatta, past chairman, CII Western region and CMD, Rasna Private Limited, started his session commenting, “Udyog Manthan is a great initiative especially with lot of efforts for the Ministry of Commerce and ministry with the Piyush Goyal who has actually possibly made to the happen."
“For me when I make food in factory as a manufacturer you have to assume you are making it for your children, so for me when I am making food in factory it should be good enough for my children then it will be good enough for anybody’s kid. I believe quality is more important than the value and today I am very proud to say people want better quality products then they come to Indian stall,” added Khambatta.
Subodh Jindal, president, AIFPA, said, “This is well recognised that quality and productivity applies on core of any successful system. We fully appreciate and honour scientists and technical factors to improve quality and enhance productivity.”
Jindal added, “Industry doing arm of its system and in this context when we talk about the quality we mean consumer satisfaction, value addition, product and process, regulatory adherence and certification etc. When we talk about productivity we mean about product availability, coasting, output, supply chain, substance the products to the consumer.”
Dr Prabodh Halde, regulatory head, Marico, said, “India and China are the only countries who have bitten their traditional food. All other countries have adopted the eating habits of other countries like colourisation and migrants came from other countries has actually changed their food habits. If you see today's corona, the impact of the corona is least in India and one of the things is to eat right, which is an eating habit.”
"The deliberations from these culminate in the creation of a compendium of sectoral recommendations that will aid industry competitiveness, lead to greater demand for Indian products and services thereby leading to export promotion and economic development," concluded Halde.
