Nov 2018 WPI for all commodities increases by 0.1% from 121.7 to 121.8

The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities (with 2011-12=100 as the base) for the month of November 2018 rose by 0.1 per cent to 121.8 (provisional) from 121.7 (provisional) for the previous month.

Inflation The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 4.64 per cent (provisional) for the month of November 2018 (over November 2017) as compared to 5.28 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and 4.02 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build-up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 4.73 per cent compared to a build-up rate of 2.83 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarised below: Primary articles (Weight 22.62 per cent)
The index for this major group rose by 0.7 per cent to 137.2 (provisional) from 136.3 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the food articles group rose by 0.2 per cent to 146.1 (provisional) from 145.8 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of peas/chawali (22 per cent), jowar (10 per cent), bajra (nine per cent), urad (seven per cent), egg (six per cent), arhar, gram and betel leaves (four per cent each), moong and poultry chicken (three per cent each), tea, barley, maize, fish-inland and fish-marine (two per cent each) and pork, beef and buffalo meat, wheat and rajma (one per cent each). However, the price of mutton and fruits and vegetables (two per cent each) and ragi (one per cent) declined.
The index for the non-food articles group rose by one per cent to 124.6 (provisional) from 123.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of castor seed (13 per cent), guar seed (eight per cent), gingelly seed (seven per cent), raw wool and groundnut seed (six per cent each), safflower (kardi seed) (five per cent), floriculture and hides (raw) (two per cent each) and raw cotton, raw jute, soybean, sunflower and rape and mustard seed (one per cent each). However, the price of raw silk, raw rubber and copra (coconut) (four per cent each) and skins (raw) and cotton seed (two per cent each) declined.

Manufactured products (Weight 64.23%) The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous month level of 118.8. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the manufacture of food products group declined by 0.4 per cent to 129 (provisional) from 129.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs and products thereof (five per cent), palm oil and bagasse (four per cent each), cotton seed oil (three per cent), rice products, gur and manufacture of cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery (two per cent each) and rice bran oil, vanaspati, buffalo meat (fresh/frozen), sunflower oil, powder milk, sugar, rice (non-basmati), butter and chicken/duck (dressed-fresh/frozen) (one per cent each).

However, the price of molasses (eight per cent), castor oil (six per cent), coffee powder with chicory (five per cent), honey (four per cent), wheat bran, gram powder (besan), other meats (preserved/processed), groundnut oil and manufacture of starches and starch products (three per cent each), spices (including mixed spices), manufacture of processed ready-to-eat food, instant coffee and copra oil (two per cent each) and manufacture of prepared animal feeds, processed tea, manufacture of health supplements, basmati rice, ghee, condensed milk and mustard oil (one per cent each) moved up.

The index for the manufacture of beverages group rose by 0.7 per cent to 121.7 (provisional) from 120.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of rectified spirit (two per cent) and aerated drinks/soft drinks (including soft drink concentrates) and country liquor (one per cent each).

The index for the manufacture of tobacco products group declined by 0.6 per cent to 149.7 (provisional) from 150.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to the lower prices of other tobacco products (one per cent).

WPI Food Index (Weight 24.38 per cent) The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of food articles from the primary articles group and the food products from the manufactured products group decreased from -0.64 per cent in October 2018 to -1.96 per cent in November 2018.

Final index for the m,onth of September 2018 (Base year: 2011-12 = 100) For the month of September, 2018, the final Wholesale Price Index for All Commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 120.9 as compared to 120.8 (provisional) and the annual rate of inflation based on the final index stood at 5.22 per cent as compared to 5.13 per cent (provisional), respectively, as reported on October 15, 2018.
