The year 2020 has been a challenge for everyone. People spent most of their time indulging in various activities like cooking, reading up on mental health, and exploring new opportunities.
One of the major changes Sairaj Dhond - founder and CEO of Wakao Foods, as an industry player noticed at the time was the change in people’s mind-set towards plant-based meat. People became more open to trying new things and wanting to adapt to a healthy lifestyle.
Making small changes and adopting a conscious lifestyle can do good to society in the long run. Consumers also want to eat good and healthy food, without compromising on its quality.
The existing alternatives for meat so far have been soya chunks and mushrooms for vegans, and cottage cheese for vegetarians. Being the new entrant into the industry, Jackfruit is making waves because of its meat-like texture and versatility.
Popularly known as a superfood, the fruit has multiple nutritional benefits and serves as a perfect alternative to meat with its unique characteristics.
While meat holds a huge part in the HoReCa segment of the country, ironically India has the highest number of vegetarian consumers. Mock meat in the form of ‘jack meat’ has awakened a curiosity amongst people.
Traditionally, jackfruit has been a part of our cuisine in the form of “katalkibhaji” and “jackfruit biryani” and is available in selective restaurants of the South as well. Currently, alternative meat is less than a fraction of the entire HoReCa segment.
Mock meat is all set to sway the industry with its uniqueness and how delectable it can be.
