HRAWI organises information technology seminar for hotels, restaurants

The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) organised a special seminar on information technology (IT) for hotels and restaurants at the Hotel Sahara Star in Mumbai recently.
Hospitality professionals from several Mumbai-based hotel and restaurant establishments participated in the seminar that was conducted by industry’s leading exponents in the fields of cyber threats, liabilities, managed guest Internet services and revenue monetising models on Wi-Fi.
The subject matter experts (SMEs) imparted knowledge and key know-how on IT related to hotels and restaurants to identify and protect businesses against cyber security threats as well as to optimise the use of the Internet for reaching a broader customer base.
HRAWI organises several such value-added initiatives from time to time for its members to remain informed and updated on the latest developments in the industry.
“The availability of Wi-Fi in hotels and restaurants is a norm today and is included as part of basic services provided to clients. Tourists staying at a hotel, whether domestic or international now expect the availability of this service as a default which once upon a time was provided on a chargeable basis,” said Gurbaxish Singh Kohli, president, HRAWI.
“However, the online world also brings along with it potential security risks for the establishment. A single potent attack could seriously damage a business and as an implication may cause severe financial burden for both the establishment as well as for the guest,” he added.
“It may also affect the brand reputation and so it has become extremely important that hotels and restaurants protect themselves against possible cyber security threats,” said Kohli.
Rajesh Pillai, chief executive officer, Treya Wireless Pvt Ltd, and Ravish Jhala, a post-graduate in e-business, conducted the seminar. The seminar broadly covered topics on managed guest Internet service for hotels, restaurants and cafés, revenue monetise models on Wi-Fi, cyber threats and liabilities and ways to safeguard all stakeholders. The sessions were specifically designed keeping in mind the nature of business of hotels and restaurants.
“The IT seminar, as expected, was very impactful and the experts kept it simple and easy to understand for the participants. One of the biggest takeaways from this seminar was learning ways to identify potential cyber-related threats and means to safeguard against the same,” said Shail Barot, chairman, seminar committee, HRAWI.
“I thank the participants for attending the seminar and making it a success, and I also thank Pillai and Jhala for sharing their knowledge with us,” he added.
