The Government of India is set to organise a series of nationwide workshops for edible oil manufacturers, refiners, and traders to ensure effective implementation of the newly introduced regulatory norms for the edible oil sector. The initiative aims to enhance transparency, ensure product quality, and strengthen consumer confidence in one of India’s most essential food segments.
According to officials from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the workshops will be conducted in collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and state food departments. These interactive sessions will educate stakeholders about compliance requirements under the updated Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules.
The new norms mandate clearer labelling of blended edible oils, accurate disclosure of oil compositions, and traceability mechanisms to track sourcing and refining practices. Officials stated that these steps are essential to curb adulteration, ensure fair trade, and protect consumer interests.
“The workshops will bridge the gap between regulation and implementation by helping edible oil businesses understand the finer details of the new standards,” said a senior official. He added, “The government’s approach is consultative we want to ensure compliance through awareness and industry participation rather than strict enforcement alone.”
Industry representatives have welcomed the move, noting that better clarity on regulations will help streamline operations and maintain consistency across brands. With India being one of the world’s largest consumers and importers of edible oils, improved regulatory practices are expected to have a positive ripple effect on both domestic and export markets.
The government plans to hold these workshops in key refining hubs such as Mumbai, Kandla, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad over the coming months, ensuring that all stakeholders from large processors to small traders are well-prepared for a smooth transition to the new system.
