FSSAI sets up committees to listen to &sort out import-related issues
Wednesday, 21 December, 2016, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has constituted two committees to listen and to sort out the issues related to food import. In an official order, the apex regulator stated that one would examine the representations by food importers against authorised officers’ (AOs’) ruling, while the other would be an apexcommittee, whose order would be final.

The order stated that the first committee, comprising director, imports, director, risk assessment and research and development (RARD), and two consultants will examine the representations of the importers aggrieved by the order of the AOs and import-related issues referred to the FSSAI headquarters by the AOs.

And the apex committee will examine the decisions of the first committee on the request of the first committee or the aggrieved importer. And the decision taken by the apex committee will be final. This apex committee comprises the chief executive officer, FSSAI, advisor standards, advisor regulations and head quality assurance.

The first committee was set up earlier, but FSSAI thought of constituting the apex committee to give importers another chance to present their cases, because when a consignment is rejected and sent back,it puts a lot of financial burden on the trader.

Pawan Kumar Agarwal, chief executive officer, FSSAI, said, “We want to make sure that such rejection cases would be minimum without compromising the food safety.”
