FSSAI notifies FBOs to use encapsulated ferrous sulphate for salt fortification

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a direction regarding the usage of encapsulated ferrous sulphate as one of the sources of nutrients for double fortified salt under Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
Through said direction the apex food regulator has allowed the use of encapsulated ferrous sulphate for the fortification of the iodised salt and also prescribed the weight of sodium chloride on a dry basis.
A senior official with the FSSAI told that with innovative processing techniques, encapsulated Ferrous Sulphate is also available as source of iron and hence, 'encapsulated ferrous sulphate' was allowed in double fortified salt as source of Iron.
The direction says, “It has been decided that the salt used for the manufacture of Iron Fortified Iodised Salt (double fortified salt) shall have minimum 99 per cent sodium chloride content on dry weight basis when the source of nutrients in non-encapsulated form is used for fortification and minimum 98 per cent sodium chloride content on dry weight basis when the source of nutrients in encapsulated form is used for fortification.”
Until now, under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 relating to standards for Iron Fortified Iodised Salt (double fortified salt), ferrous sulphate is allowed in non-encapsulated form and ferrous fumarate is allowed in encapsulated form with the requirement of 99 per cent and 98 per cent sodium chloride content on dry weight basis respectively.
