Pawan Kumar Agarwal, chief executive officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), said the apex food regulator is committed to make robust and unambiguous standards for food supplements with the help of the industry during a seminar, which was titled Nutraceuticals - Seizing Growth Opportunities under Changing Economic and Regulatory Landscape and organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi.
At the seminar, which was attended by about 100 participants from the nutraceuticals industry, he urged the players in the food processing industry to work with FSSAI to develop a good manufacturing practices (GMP) document and adopt it to overcome the challenges of spurious and dubious products flooding the Indian markets.
Agarwal said, “FSSAI is working with the central drug regulator to make clear distinction between drugs and food, which will clear a lot of ambiguity present among the stakeholders.”
The other speakers in the inaugural session included B Sesikeran, chairman, scientific panel on functional foods, nutraceuticals, dietetic products and other similar products, FSSAI; Dr A K Sharma, consultant, FSSAI; Sanjaya Mariwala, chairman, FICCI Task Force on Nutraceuticals, and managing director and chief executive officer, OmniActive Health Technologies Ltd, Sandeep Ahuja, chairman, FICCI Wellness Committee, and executive director, VLCC Healthcare Ltd, and A Didar Singh, secretary general, FICCI.
Singh, while welcoming the delegates, emphasised the need to have standards for food products and how FICCI can collaboratively work with FSSAI to expand the scope of standards beyond the current standards.
Mariwala highlighted the growth opportunities in nutraceuticals and their contribution to the Make in India initiative. He also invite industry members to work collaboratively on matters related to goods and service tax (GST).
On behalf of FICCI, Ahuja proposed the vote of thanks.
