CII-FACE, NCCD to organise session on opportunities in cold chain sector

In a bid to create awareness about the opportunities in the cold chain sector, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE) and the National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD) have teamed up to organise a two-hour session, which will commence at 11am on January 13, 2017. SJCE-STEP, JSS Technical Institutions Campus, Mysuru. There is no registration fee.

The organisers said, “India’s cold chain industry is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28 per cent over the next four years, presenting a great opportunity to explore.”

According to a NCCD study, the estimated requirement for cold storage bulk products is 3,41,64,411 metric tons (MT) for long-term holding of fresh produce like potatoes, dried chillies and apples, among others.

The need for cold storage hubs is 9,36,251 MT, segregated by temperature ranges of chilled, mild chilled and frozen.

Besides cold stores, a good distribution system is required to address the missing links in terms of other cold chain infrastructure components at farm level, like modern pack-houses and transportation through reefer vehicles.

This will help to integrate the cold chain, expand the reach to markets and thereby minimise the loss to perishable products.

“Therefore, a  higher requirement in terms of modern pack-houses, refrigerated transport units and ripening chambers is envisaged,” stated the study.

The schemes for developing holistic farm to consumer coldchain under the ministry of agriculture and family welfare’s Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI), and the ministry of commerce and industry’s Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) would be discussed at the awareness session.

Cold-chain is a logistics conduit, linking producing points with consumption centres. The major components that need to be developed for effective integration of the coldchain sector are  static Infrastructure,  like  immobile infrastructure at the farmgate  with modern pack-houses with pre-coolers, value adding units, bulk cold warehouses and cold distribution hubs for last-mile access to markets.

To further streamline the cold chain, there is a need for mobile infrastructure, covering  transport units to connect the static infrastructuredesigned for logistical load factors  like small-volume transits and long-haul transits.

“Additionally, coldchain extends to last-mile retail or point of sale (POS) at merchandising platforms. There is also a need for both qualified personnel and labourers to support the functioning for the cold chain infrastructure,”stated the Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation (KAPPEC).

Six years ago, the corporation adopted apublic-private partnership (PPP) model to develop the integrated cold storage and multi-fruit processing units at Belagavi and Kolar.
