Biodiesel manufacturers are seeking a policy which can assure regular supply of used cooking oil from restaurants, hotels and other food processing industries, as cooking oils have a large share in the production of biodiesel and are easily available.

Sandeep Chaturvedi, president, Biodiesel Association of India, said, “The food processing industry and restaurant sector can be of a great help as it is easily available and it will help increase the biodiesel output by approximately four times. Thus, a legislation in this regard will offer more support.”

“Biodiesel can be a good substitute as it is less polluting compared to other fossil fuels. Several associations from the food processing industry are ready to extend their support by giving access to the used cooking oil,” he added.

Chaturvedi also suggested that the legislation to procure used cooking oils and making it mandatory through laws will be good as cooking oil accounts for a share of 18- 20 per cent of the total output of biodiesel.

Kamlesh Barot, director, Vie Hospitality Private Limited, said that it was a positive move and would benefit hotels and restaurants. He said, “It will be better for small restaurants and will also benefit them as it will be easy for them to dispose. Earlier, we, at our hotel, sold such cooking oil as scrap to the soap manufacturers and the handloom sector, but today, as the diesel prices are going up, it will be a positive move for players like us as it will add on to our profits.”

Addressing concerns of overuse
“Some small restaurants and eateries overuse edible oil which is not recommended. But nowadays, due to awareness among consumers, such players have also gradually adopted hygiene at their food joints and stopped the overuse of edible oils. If the proposed legislation comes into play, it will keep an eye on players who are overusing used cooking oils. Cooking oil for us is just a waste but if an effective chain is established, it will be a significant development to manufacture biodiesel,” Barot added.
