PM to confer ICAR awards on CMs of best performing states in agriculture

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be presenting the best performance awards to the chief ministers of different states for their performance in the field of agriculture. The award function is being organised to celebrate the 83rd Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi today.
A source from ICAR confirmed that at least 10 awards would be given to the chief ministers in recognition of productivity of 10 different crops.
The awards, which are instituted by the ministry of agriculture, would recognise states' performance in achieving the highest total production and productivity of individual crops during the period.
Along with the PM, Sharad Pawar, minister of agriculture and food processing industries, will present the ICAR awards in different categories. Pawar will also e-launch new initiatives of ICAR, which will include a book compiled on the journey of ICAR, a rice management portal, e-courses in agriculture and architectural design of Dr Subramanian auditorium.
ICAR has a long tradition to recognise excellence by giving awards to exceptional contributions made in agricultural research, education and extension. The various award categories include researchers, progressive farmers, farm journalists, teachers, authors and so on. This year, there will be 85 awardees under 17 different categories. These comprise 13 institutions, 59 scientists, 10 farmers and 3 journalists. Out of the 59 scientists and 10 farmers, there are 9 women scientists and 1 woman farmer.
The first-ever Plant Genome Saviour Community Awards (2009-10) will also be given on the occasion. Instituted by the Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers' Rights Authority, it is the first attempt to appreciate the outstanding contribution of individual farmers and farming communities in conserving agro-biodiversity.
